Mary Frances Garnett was born on October 17, 1944, to Louis Curry, Sr. and Carrie Bell Curry.

At an early age, she joined Spring Grove Baptist Church in Appling, Georgia, under the leadership of Reverend Sylvester Bing. She later moved her membership to Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
