On Sunday, January 22, 2017, Marilyn Joyce Kelly went to be with the Lord with her loving husband by her side. She was born in Midland, Georgia to the late Jefferson Burkes, Sr. and Christine Elizabeth Varnedore on November 12, 1947. She was educated in Columbus, Georgia and graduated from G.W. Carver High School. She married her husband, William H. Kelly on July 5, 1974.
Marilyn Joyce started her thirty-two years of federal service as a Medical Clerk in Stuttgart, Germany, then transitioned to a Military Personnel Clerk. She faithfully served twenty-seven of those years at the U.S. Army Child and Youth Services Center as an active lead Educational Technician where she took care of numerous “grandbabies”. She loved to walk the children in the bye-bye buggy and tell them about the environment.
Marilyn Joyce was an avid and active member of many service organizations: Ushers Union of Georgia (Correspondence Secretary); GSMBC Ushers Ministry (Chief Usher); Senior Missionary Society; GSMBC Trustee Board; Red Hat Society, Sassy Red Hat Chicks of Hephzibah Chapter, (Founding Vice Queen Mother); Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home (William and Joyce Kelly Monthly Bingo); Nifty Fifty and Over Travel Gang (Founding Member); Juneteenth Society of Greater Augusta; Blacks in Government (BIG) of Augusta (Lifetime member and 2nd Vice President); Great American Women of Augusta Social and Savings Club (Treasurer); Enlisted Wives Club of Fort Gordon, Georgia (Ways and Means Chairperson); Spouses Wives Club of Fort Gordon, Georgia; Federal Employed Women (FEW) of Fort Gordon, Georgia; Diamonds and Pearls of the Soul Sliders of Augusta (dance member); AARP Augusta Chapter #266 (Community Service Committee Chairperson)……..view obituary.
